UK Visitors Top Spain's Tourism Spending Chart at €24 Billion

August 11, 2026Olive Press

Visitors from the United Kingdom have solidified their position as Spain's most valuable foreign market, injecting a record €24 billion into the national economy over the past year, according to Olive Press. The sum places British holidaymakers well ahead of every other nationality visiting the country.

A Wide Gap at the Top

German travellers, who came in second on the spending league table, contributed just under €11 billion — less than half of what UK visitors put into hotels, restaurants, transport, and attractions across Spain. The gap underlines how central the British market has become to the health of Spanish tourism, from the Costa del Sol and the Balearics to the Canary Islands and inland cities like Madrid and Seville.

What It Means for Travellers

For anyone planning a trip to Spain, the figures reported by Olive Press suggest a couple of practical realities. Popular British-favoured destinations — Malaga, Alicante, Palma de Mallorca, Tenerife, and Benidorm among them — will likely continue to see heavy investment in English-language services, direct flight routes, and hospitality infrastructure aimed at UK visitors.

At the same time, the strong demand can push prices upward during peak summer months. Travellers hoping to avoid the busiest crowds and the steepest rates may want to consider shoulder-season trips in May, early June, or September and October, when the weather remains warm but resort towns are noticeably calmer.

Post-Brexit Travel Reminders

British passport holders should also remember the current entry rules when visiting Spain. Stays are limited to 90 days within any 180-day period without a visa, passports must be valid for at least three months beyond the planned departure date, and the EU's Entry/Exit System is now in operation at Spanish border crossings, which means biometric registration on arrival.

Despite these added steps, the record spending figures show that UK enthusiasm for Spanish holidays remains stronger than ever — good news for the industry, and a reminder to book flights and accommodation early during high season.
